Altitude Performance | Evidence-Based Tactical Fitness for Firefighters
Built by a Firefighter, for Firefighters

Firefighter Strength & Conditioning,
Built to Last 30 Years on the Job.

This job already asks a lot of your body: broken sleep, 2am tones, a schedule nobody was built for. It’s easy to think the answer is just pushing harder. I’m a career firefighter and a strength coach of 23 years, and I built Altitude Performance because training without a real plan isn’t training. It’s damage.

Heart disease is still the leading killer of firefighters, most of it preventable. Your cardiovascular system is trainable at any age, but it takes more than random workouts or grinding every shift. That’s exactly what Altitude Performance is built to do.

Grinding Yourself Into the Ground
Isn’t Training. It’s Damage.

A lot of fitness programs default to going hard, all the time: max-intensity workouts that don’t account for shift work, broken sleep, or what this job actually asks of your body. Firefighters are tough, and that instinct makes sense. But without a real plan, that’s not training. It’s just damage.

I work the same shifts you do. Same hose, same gear, same 2am tones. I know what this job does to your body over time, and I built this to work with that reality instead of ignoring it.

Science-Based. Shift-Aware. Built for This Job.
What’s Built Into Every Program
  • Synced to your shift. Your rotation, broken sleep, and 2am calls are factored into every training block.
  • Built around the fireground. Grip strength, hose pulls, drags, and climbing stairs under load are trained for directly.
  • Recovery is programmed. Stacked shifts, back-to-back calls, and broken sleep are built into how your training progresses.
  • Real structure. A true training cycle, so every session builds toward something instead of piling on random stress.

One Standard. Set by the Job.

The fireground doesn't care how old you are, your sex, or how long you've been training. The demands of the job are fixed, so the standard is fixed too. One line for every event, set by what the work actually requires.

We recognize that men and women develop strength and fitness differently, but the fireground doesn’t change based on who responds. Every program is built to close that gap intelligently, so everyone trains toward the same operational standard.

Below Standard — BASE

You aren't ready for the job on this quality yet. That's not a knock. It's a starting point, and the first thing your training fixes.

Standard: Job Ready — ASCENT

Rested and in good conditions, you can meet what the fireground asks of you on this quality.

Operational Reserve — SUMMIT

Past the minimum. That extra room is the buffer that keeps you working when the heat, the gear, and the fatigue try to take the standard away.

The Altitude Performance Operational Readiness Standard™
The Nine Events
Tested rested, in shorts. You do the job in 50 lb of gear, in the heat, on no sleep, so you train for the reserve, not the minimum.

*These operational standards were developed by integrating current firefighter research, TSAC and NSCA best practices, occupational performance demands, and real-world fire service experience to establish evidence-based benchmarks for operational readiness.

This assessment is not a hiring examination, medical evaluation, departmental certification, or guarantee of safe fireground performance. It's a coaching and performance-development tool, use it event by event: your lowest-performing quality is where the next training block should focus, and reassessing under the same conditions is how you track real progress.

One standard, set by the job. Train to clear it with room to spare.
Whether it’s preparing for off-duty races, ski season, or maintaining a solid baseline for the job, the adjustments were made and I felt like I had a competitive edge.

I Work the Same Job
You Do.

I'm Jim McDonald. Career firefighter, strength and conditioning coach for 23 years, and the founder of Altitude Performance. Before the fire service I worked strength and conditioning at the Division I and professional level, alongside registered dietitians, sports scientists, and some of the best performance coaches in the country. Then I came into this job and saw how much the training didn’t fit the work.

I work the same shifts you do. I pull the same hose, wear the same gear, and feel the same 2am tones drop. I know what this job does to your body over time, and I built this to work with that reality, not against it.

Altitude Performance is training grounded in science, built around the demands of this job, and designed to keep you healthy, capable, and strong for your entire career. I want my peers to retire well, to be present for their families, and to feel good every day. That's why this exists.

Six Pillars. One Goal:
Perform Well Throughout Your Career and Retire Healthy.

This job comes with unpredictable demands, broken sleep, high stress, and a long career ahead of you. Altitude Performance is built specifically around all of that.

01

Aerobic Foundation Drives Performance

Zone 2 work is the base everything else is built on: a stronger heart, better cellular efficiency, and faster recovery between calls. Once that engine is built, we layer in intensity, not before.

02

Strength for Longevity, Not Ego

Strength builds more resilient tissue, more usable force, and joints that hold up over a career. Heavy work is dosed carefully within a planned progression, never maxed out for its own sake.

03

Shift-Based Periodization

Your programming adapts to your actual schedule, whatever rotation you’re running. We build around broken sleep and unpredictable call volume, and adjust based on how you’re actually recovering.

04

Recovery Is a Performance Skill

Better sleep, real recovery between stress responses, smart use of caffeine and stimulants, and daily mobility are built into the program, not squeezed in as an afterthought.

05

Fueling for Operational Output

Nutrition keeps your energy stable, protects your muscle, and supports real recovery: enough protein, smart carb timing around shifts, good hydration, and a foundation of real food.

06

Career Longevity & Identity

This is about more than fitness: managing stress, keeping a sustainable body composition, and building a lifestyle that holds up so you can perform well at 25 and still retire healthy decades later.
